EILEN JEWELL + GUESTS

Eilen Jewell is the queen of the minor key. Sad songs are her wealth and finery. But beware, savvy observer. Do not confuse the singer and her songs. Eilen’s fans have marveled at her warmth, unique wit, and onstage humor. Her song writing is a blend of influences from early blues, rockabilly and surf-noir, to 1960s era rock and roll. Her repertoire includes everything from up-tempo rockers that swing, to stunning, lyrically poetic ballads. The Los Angeles Daily News wrote, “Sometimes as darkly damaged as Lucinda Williams, at others as defiant and teasing as prime Peggy Lee and always authentically Americana in the Gillian Welch tradition…. She’s mighty good.”

Eilen and her band have been living on the road, from North America to Western Europe, New Zealand and Australia, and have shared the stage with Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Blind Boys of Alabama, Chris Smither, and Junior Brown. Hollywood stars (Tom Hanks in Entertainment Weekly) to heads of state (British Prime Minister David Cameron in Britain’s Telegraph) have praised Eilen’s music in the press.

Eilen is currently recording her fifth, full-length, solo album with her long-time road band of guitar great Jerry G. Miller, husband and drummer Jason Beek, and slapping upright bass player Johnny Sciascia. THIS IS A PARTIALLY SEATED SHOW

Hey Marseilles + Guests

  • Date: 04/04/2014

  • Time(s): 8:00pm (7:30pm Doors)

  • Location: The Bartlett

Five miles south of downtown Seattle is the neighborhood of Columbia City—a leafy stretch of old brownstones and new condos which, according to local legend and loosely interpreted census data, boasts the most diverse zip code in America. Not far from Columbia City’s main drag, amidst a swirl of languages and colors and food and accents, sits a 100-year-old, two-story house that’s home to the world-weary, six-piece orchestral-pop ensemble known as Hey Marseilles.

World-weary in spirit if not in practice: Hey Marseilles first won hearts across the US with its 2010 debut, To Travels and Trunks, an album that reveled in the education and inspiration only globe-trotting exploration can provide. With Matt Bishop’s lyrical wayfaring abutting an instrumental palette that embraced folk tradition—accordion, strings, and horns; gypsy, Gallic, and classical—To Travels and Trunks gave musical voice to the universal longing for unfettered freedom. NPR called the record “sublime and heartfelt.”

THE CAVE SINGERS + HEATWARMER

The core trio of singer Pete Quirk, guitarist Derek Fudesco & drummer Marty Lund have added long time friend Morgan Henderson (Blood Brothers, Fleet Foxes) on bass and extra instrumentation to round out The Cave Singers family. Together they have charted new territory for the band both musically and spiritually, while remaining true to their distinctive brand of brushfired folk. After some time in the dark wealth of the unknown, they have returned to the light with a revitalized purpose. Making music as a cure. Music as a home you always have.

BARCELONA + MACKINTOSH BRAUN

The Seattle-based trio Barcelona makes soulfully sultry rock seeped in synth wash and falsetto that could score the soundtrack to late night necking seshs and uncouth after-hours adventures. Perhaps Barcelona is the soundscape to white blazers and mirrored tables, the sleek sound of questionable decisions that you won’t regret later.

It’s a new direction for an established band who were once signed to Universal Records, where they became well-known for melodic, piano-based indie ballads. Now, their evolution continues, as they chart a distinct course with a new vision. “Sonically and visually things have changed,” drummer Rhett Stonelake says. “[Singer/songwriter] Brian Fennell is now playing guitar, having previously played keyboards, and we have a new member Branden Cate dedicated to playing a new palette of synths/keys.” Fennell continues: “We were exploring new territory with new instruments, which kind of felt like moving to a new country for a year without really knowing the language and just jumping in. At times, it made me laugh uncontrollably because we would have never made music like this five or even three years ago. It showed me how seriously to not take myself or the band.”

JENNY HVAL + MARK MCGUIRE

Jenny Hval has in recent years made a name for herself as an artist, musician and writer both in Norway and abroad. When her third record Viscera was released in 2011, WIRE magazine described the record as: “a stunning achievement both conceptually and musically.”

Multidisciplinary and transgressive are words often employed to describe her art, but Jenny Hval’s polyphonic artistry is in fact seamlessly interwoven between musical, literary, visual and performative modes of expression. Despite her young age, she has already infused, carved and modulated an artistic voice that is altogether present, accessible and obscurely complex at the same time.
